Empowering your Birth Journey by Understanding VBAC

Updated: Oct 20

For many birthing people who have experienced a cesarean birth, the idea of a Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC) can bring a mix of emotions—hope, curiosity, and maybe even a little fear. At In Joy Birth, our doulas believe that every family deserves the right to explore their birth options with evidence-based information, emotional support, and confidence in their body’s wisdom.

What Is VBAC?

VBAC stands for Vaginal Birth After Cesarean—it’s exactly what it sounds like: giving birth vaginally after a prior cesarean. In the past, VBAC was often discouraged, but today, research shows that for most people, VBAC is a safe and empowering option. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), around 70% of those who attempt a VBAC have a successful vaginal birth!

Why Consider a VBAC?

Choosing a VBAC can offer many benefits including a shorter recovery time, lower complications after birth, and even an empowering and redemptive birth experience.

Is VBAC Safe?

Every birth is unique, and safety depends on individual health, medical history, and the type of cesarean incision. That’s why it’s essential to discuss your options with a supportive care provider who understands VBAC evidence and respects your goals.Hospitals and out of hospital births that offer Trial of Labor After Cesarean (TOLAC) can provide continuous monitoring and emergency resources if needed. With informed planning and compassionate support, VBAC can be a safe and powerful experience.

Questions to Ask Your Provider About VBAC Support

Finding a VBAC-supportive provider can make all the difference in your experience and outcomes. Here’s a checklist of questions to guide your conversations and ensure your care team truly supports your goals:

  1. What is your cesarean rate?

  2. Do you have specific criteria that all patients must follow in order to have a TOLAC?

  3. What is your repeat cesarean rate?

  4. Do you support VBAC after two cesareans?

  5. Roughly, how many of your planned VBAC patients are successful?

  6. Who is your backup doctor, and do they maintain the same standards for VBAC patients?

  7. Do you require me to have a scheduled cesarean on the calendar?

  8. What if I carry beyond 40 weeks? What are my options?

  9. Are you willing to augment labor with Pitocin if it stalls?

These questions help open honest communication and reveal whether your provider’s philosophy aligns with your birthing goals. You deserve a care team that values shared decision-making, informed consent, and respect for your choices.

The Power of Doula Support in VBAC Success

One of the most impactful ways to increase your chances of a successful VBAC is to have a doula by your side. Evidence from ACOG shows that continuous labor support—especially from a trained doula—significantly increases the likelihood of vaginal birth and reduces the need for medical interventions, including cesareans.*

Doulas not only provide continuous labor and birth support but also invaluable education to help prepare your mind and body for your upcoming birth. Doulas are known to be great advocates and help facilitate communication with your medical team. Not to mention doulas also provide postpartum care and follow up support after the birth during your healing period. Having a doula is not a luxury but an essential part of your birthing team.

At In Joy Birth our team of doulas are certified birth professionals who specialize in supporting VBAC families. We walk with you every step of the way—helping you make evidence-based decisions, build confidence, and prepare for a birth experience that feels grounded, informed, and empowering.
